Animal Assisted Therapy

I am accepting new clients!

Welcome/Bienvenue, I’m so glad you’re here!

I provide support for adults and first responders facing a variety of mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, attachment injuries, loss, and grief (including the loss of a loved one, the end of a romantic relationship, the end of a friendship, etc.), emotional regulation, and suicidal ideation.

I work from a person-centered and holistic approach to address my client’s emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. I draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy while integrating components from Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I am also bilingual and am excited to offer in-person and virtual sessions in both French and English.

I value client empowerment and invite you into the treatment planning process to best meet your needs and goals. This is your journey!

With a genuine and empathetic spirit, I am passionate about ensuring a safe and secure space where anyone can feel comfortable expressing any emotion, thought, or struggle. I welcome all stories, backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and those who value vulnerability and self-discovery.

Canine-Assisted and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy

I am so excited to connect you with my animals and together we will work toward your mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. Currently, I offer equine-assisted psychotherapy at the Riverfront Equestrian Centre.

About me: I grew up on an acreage in southern Manitoba. Animals hold a special place in my heart and have always been a big part of my life. Growing up over the years, I had fish, hamsters, a guinea pig, a bunny, four birds, cats, and many dogs. I wholeheartedly believe in the healing power of animals, and this is why I pursued training in Animal and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy!

Why AAT & EAT? There’s no denying the benefits of psychotherapy, however, traditional talk therapy can be difficult for some clients. The unique practice of Animal and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy involves the intentional inclusion of an animal to help you meet your individual needs and therapeutic goals. For example, if you’re feeling anxious, engaging with the therapy animal through talking and petting may help to reduce anxiety and create a sense of connectedness. In addition, therapy animals can help build a strong therapeutic relationship, make sessions more engaging, and may be tailored to suit culturally diverse clients!

My name is Madison Duncan and I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists. I value expressing empathy, kindness, and unconditional acceptance. Your counselling needs, personal strengths, and goals will be prioritized and emphasized during our time together. My goal is to build a therapeutic bond based on trust, authenticity, and respect so that you can feel safe and comfortable in the counselling room with me. I welcome individuals of all cultural backgrounds and the LGBTQ2S+ community. I have experience working with a wide variety of client concerns but have a special interest in treating anxiety and depression. I integrate a variety of therapeutic approaches, with an emphasis on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I have also been trained in Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) and I would love for you to meet my co-therapist, Hagrid (my Labradoodle). I have completed additional training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD (CPT) and play therapy-based interventions.

I completed a Master of Education degree in Counselling Psychology at the University of Lethbridge and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Psychology at Concordia University of Edmonton. During and prior to my master’s degree, I completed internships with Summit Counselling, the Children’s Autism Services of Edmonton and an AHS community mental health clinic. I have also volunteered with organizations such as the Zebra Child Protection Centre and AHS mental health advisory committees.

Outside of the counselling room I enjoy playing soccer, practicing yoga, reading books, playing video games, and watching reality TV shows with my friends and family.
